Lost and Sound FREE MIX 04: MKL

It takes a lot to stand out behind the decks in a city overpopulated with established musical talent and aspiring DJs. That’s why discovering DJ/producer MKL was so refreshing, although this guy is not a new face in the city. Born in Belize, but raised in New York, MKL began dropping beats around town twenty years ago
and today he is a frequent guest among popular venues from Nublu to Cielo. His eclectic taste in music is what makes him a gem of a DJ and his diverse palette is reflected through his sophisticated sets that are colored with everything from luscious deep house beats to cosmic dub techno and worldly grooves. Throughout his musical career, MKL has always steered clear of falling into genre pigeonholing and this musical vision is manifested in his successful Lion1 Music label, which draws in artists from the few and far between. MKL has kept a pretty modest profile for such an established household name and especially for the lengthy roster of stand out productions under his belt. Not every good DJ makes a good producer, but MKL is an exception and his original work, remixes and reworks of tracks are where his musical talent truly shines. His most recent release, a rework of Adultnapper’s single “Monitor” is an attest to his creativity and refined production skills. For this rework, MKL collaborated with Nublu’s jam band, BGSS, an all male group made up of Brazilian Girls members Jesse Murphy, Aaron Johnston and Avi Bortnick. Ever since the rework leaked out on vinyl earlier this year, the afro-groove twist of the deep-tech original has caught the ears of DJs across the house music realm from DJ Disciple to Victor Calderone and Alex from Tokyo. Check out the tracks officially released in digital format, only on halycondigi.com. In celebration of today's digital release, MKL has delivered this exclusive mix that captures his unmatchable style and groove. This mix will give you a taste – just a taste – of what will go down at the Monitor release party this Thursday. More info here. Also check out an exclusive interview with MKL about the release.
