Lost and Sound 05: WMC Countdown Mix by Monty Luke

To kick-start this WMC Countdown Edition, I couldn't think of anyone else more suited to rev up the engines than Monty Luke, and thankfully he agreed to make this exclusive mix. (scroll below to stream and download).

Monty Luke has been dubbed the “those that know” kind of DJ. I was not in “the know” until I discovered him earlier this year when he visited halcyon the shop on a lovely Saturday afternoon earlier this year and dropped some serious deepness well into the evening. The music was fresh, widely eclectic ranging from tribal techno to funky disco. Even though there were only two people in the shop that day (myself included) I couldn’t help but dance alone in the aisles– he just kept pumping out the beats. Good times

Currently, Monty Luke lives and works in Detroit for Planet E as Carl Craig’s right-hand man. Why feature a Detroit artist when we’re talking WMC, not DEMF? That is because Monty will be performing as a part of one of the most exciting events coming to Conference this year – the first ever D25 Tour that will be launching their kick-off night in Miami next Thursday, featuring a crème de la crème line up of Detroit artists. Click here for more info and to salivate over the outstanding line up.

I also chose Monty to make this mix because his style embraces a taste of the unique musical flavors from some of the leading US cities in house and techno music - New York, San Francisco and Detroit. This is not surprising considering he has been quite the nomad – he was born in Brooklyn, raised in LA then lived in San Francisco for several years where he was a part of Claude von Stroke’s Mothership crew and involved in several other collaborations in the Bay Area. And now he’s serving up the goods in Detroit. This guy’s on a roll.

So after all's said and done, it's time for you to be in the know. Tune in, turn up the volume and warm up your WMC dancing shoes to Monty’s contagious rhythm.
