On the Road: Booka Shade

Booka Shade, the notable Berlin-based duo are on a roll this summer (check out their insane tour schedule). Well, it’s not like they ever stopped charging through since they first knocked audiences over with their live act in 2005. The team – Malter Merziger and Arno Kammermeir – are responsible for buffing up the flimsy face of live synth-pop acts with a flare of Teutonic techno-meets-electro-house. Techno-rock, perhaps? En route to Movement, Booka Shade spared us a moment while taking a pit stop in New York and chatted about Red Rock, afterparties with Sven Vath and what they jam to on the road. Interview and Photos by Jared Powers.

What are you looking forward to the most regarding this tour?

Definitely the Sasquatch Festival, being the first Germans to play Red Rocks is going to be amazing and going back to DEMF.

Highlight of the year so far?

The Australian leg of the tour, it was larger than life!

Where were you when you forgot to go home?

When we played Perth, Australia. We both forgot to home and danced our way onto the plane. We were at an aftershow house party thrown by Sven Vath in the suburbs, it was us a 30 other intl djs just playing in a private house. The next day was our interview day in Sydney and all the electro sites down under read, “Booka Shade praise Sven Vath’s house party.” It was really quite funny actually.

What music do you listen to just for yourself, on your free time?

Anything downtempo, no beats. We’ve been rediscovering the Cure because our tour manager used to be on the road with them and is full of great stories about their tour.

Finish the sentence: Music is my….

Our passion, our life, our everything. The only thing as important is family.

Where do you see yourself 5 years from now?

Still touring. I hope that in 5 years we can present ourselves the way we see ourselves with a larger than life techno show.

What are you doing tonight?

Dinner with Phillip (aka M.A.N.D.Y.), drinks with the road crew and then we’ll see where the night takes us.
